Trigger Links

Before You Dive In

Trigger links are special links you can add to your emails, SMS messages, Facebook/Instagram DMs, and WhatsApp messages inside Ivorey™.

When someone clicks a trigger link:

  • They are taken to a page you’ve chosen: This could be a sales page, form, booking page, or any other URL

  • Their click is recorded: Ivorey™ records that click on their contact profile, so you know they engaged with that specific link

  • This click can now be turned into a workflow trigger: You can set up a workflow so that after the link is clicked specific actions happen automatically, such as tagging the contact, sending a follow-up email, unsubscribing them from a list, sending them event info, and so much more

Think of trigger links as a “link and action” combo. The link takes them somewhere, and the action happens behind the scenes automatically.

This guide is perfect if you want to:

  • Track who clicks on your links in emails or texts

  • Send specific follow-ups based on who clicked and who didn’t

  • Trigger any type of workflow based on someone's click

Note: Trigger Links are only supported in direct messaging channels, such as SMS, email, social media DMs, Google Business (GMB) messages, etc. They are not supported in buttons on funnel or website pages.

Step 1: Create a Trigger Link

In this step, you will set up your trigger link to link to a specific page, form or product of your choice.

Click here for the written steps

  1. From the Ivorey™ main menu, go to Marketing > and along the top menu bar, click [Trigger Links]

  2. Click [Add Link] > and fill in the details:

    1. Name: The title of your Trigger Link

    2. Link URL: This is where you want to redirect your contacts to, when they click on the trigger link (e.g. a website URL, a form link, a product)

  3. Click [Save], to create the trigger link

Step 2: Choose Where To Use Your Trigger Link

Once you've created a trigger link, you can use it many different ways! You can send it directly in messages or DMs, add it into an email template, or send it via SMS. We've provided steps for some of the most common uses.

How to Add a Trigger Link to an Email Template

Click here for the written steps

  1. From the Ivorey™ main menu, go to Marketing > Emails > then select [Templates]

  2. Click on the Email Template you want to add your Trigger Link to

  3. Once inside the email builder, highlight the text where you want to insert your trigger link

  4. Then click the 🔗 'link' icon in the top menu bar then fill in the details

    1. Link URL: This is the link key that was created when you made the trigger link

    2. Text to display: this is the text you are adding the link too (e.g. click here to read more)

    3. Title (optional): You can leave this blank, or you can give your link a title

  5. Select if you would like the link to open up in a new tab or open in the browser they are reading your email from

  6. Click [Save] to add your trigger link to the text in your email

How to Send a Trigger Link via SMS

Click here for the written steps

  1. From the Ivorey™ main menu, go to Contacts > and open the contact you would like to send an SMS to

  2. Make sure [SMS] is selected in the message box

  3. Click on the [+] icon, along the bottom menu bar of your text box > click [Trigger Links] > and select the trigger link you want to add to the SMS

Note: At this time you can't hyperlink text inside an SMS. It will display as a custom value, but will be sent as a clickable link.

Step 3: Create a Workflow For Your Trigger Link

In this step, you will build a workflow to automate what should happen after someone clicks your trigger link.

Click here for the written steps

  1. From the Ivorey™ main menu, go to Workflows > click the [+ Create New Workflow] button, at the top right corner of your screen > then select [+ Start from Scratch]

  2. At the top of the page, name your workflow (e.g. [your trigger link name]: clicked) > then click [+ Add New Trigger]:

    1. Search for and select the [Trigger Link Clicked] trigger > click [+ Add Filters] > select [Trigger Link] > select your trigger link from the drop-down menu > and click [Save Trigger]

  3. Click the [+] button, to add an action, such as:

    1. Add Tag - if you want to add a specific tag to this contact (e.g. clicked: [your trigger link name]), so that you can add them to a smart list/email segment

    2. Send Email - if you want to send them an email (you can create an email or customise a template here)

    3. Internal Notification - if you want to notify yourself or your team

Add as many actions as you want

  4. If you include an additional trigger link in your workflow email, and want to send a follow-up email to contacts that have/haven't clicked the second trigger, there are some additional steps to set up:

    1. Add a [Wait] action, after the Send Email action > set the wait condition to [Trigger Link Clicked] > select the Trigger Link you set up > and set a timeout period (e.g. 2 days) to allow recipients some time to click it

    2. The workflow will now automatically create two branches:

      1. Branch 1: "Clicked the Link" - No further action is needed, and the workflow ends for these leads

      2. Branch 2: "Did Not Click the Link" (within the time you set in the wait step action) - Here you can add more actions to this branch (e.g. send another email to follow up). This ensures that only those who haven’t clicked the link will receive another email, while those who did click won’t receive further follow-ups

  5. When you're done with your workflow, toggle it to [Publish] in the top right corner, and click the [Save] button

  6. Test your workflow by sending yourself an email with the first/only trigger link > click the link, and check if the actions take place (e.g. check if you receive the email) > check the [Execution Logs] tab, on your workflow, to see if there are any errors

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if a contact clicked a trigger link?

You can see if a contact clicked your trigger link by viewing their contact profile in the CRM. Check the Activity tab, inside their profile, on the right hand side, and look for the activity: Trigger Link Visited.

How do I send an email to people who haven't clicked a trigger link?

Inside a workflow, after a Send Email action with an email that contains a trigger link, you can add a Wait step with a Trigger Link Clicked condition. This will create two separate branches, for people who have and haven't clicked the link, and allows you to set up different actions for each branch. Please refer to the steps above for more details.
